The Shelby High School cross country team closed its season Saturday with a strong showing at the MHSA State Cross Country Championships at Amend Park in Billings, highlighted by an All-State finish from senior Aeris Stewart and historic performances from Thomas Knickerbocker and Corin Scarborough.
Stewart capped her senior season with a time of 19:49.1, placing 13th in the Class B girls race and earning All-State honors.
The finish marked Stewart’s fifth All-State selection, adding another accomplishment to one of the most decorated cross country careers in the history of the Shelby program.
On the boys' side, senior Thomas Knickerbocker finished his high school cross country career with a breakthrough performance, running 17:54.2 for a new personal best. The performance moved Knickerbocker to No. 2 on Shelby’s all-time boys cross country record board.
Knickerbocker entered the final stretch of the season with a best time of 18:46.8 before taking more than 50 seconds off that mark at State.
Junior Corin Scarborough continued what has been a remarkable first cross country season, finishing in 18:28.3 for another personal best. The performance moved Scarborough to No. 3 on Shelby’s all-time record board, placing two Coyotes among the top three performers in program history at the conclusion of the season.
Scarborough began the year running in the 22-minute range before steadily dropping time throughout the fall, eventually breaking 20 minutes and then making another major jump at the State meet.
Sophomore Tel Gray rounded out Shelby’s State competitors with a season-best 19:52.1, breaking the 20-minute barrier after a season that included several interruptions due to injury.
The State performances provided a fitting conclusion to a season in which the Coyotes showed steady improvement from the opening weeks through the championship meet.
Knickerbocker cut nearly two minutes from his early-season 5K time and finished his career second on Shelby’s record board. Scarborough developed from a first-year cross country runner into the third-fastest boys runner in program history. Gray finished the year with his fastest race of the season, while Stewart once again finished among the best Class B runners in Montana.
Shelby’s season also included freshman Jaxon Hooker, who joined the program with little distance-running experience and finished his first season with a personal-best 22:56.2.
The Coyotes now say goodbye to seniors Stewart and Knickerbocker, two athletes who played major roles in the growth of the program and provided leadership throughout the season.
For Stewart, the final race brought another All-State honor. For Knickerbocker, it brought the second-fastest boys time in Shelby history.
For Scarborough, it established him at No. 3 on the record board with another season still ahead.
And for the rest of the Coyotes, the season provided a strong foundation to build on heading into 2027.
