The Shelby High School cross country team turned in several of its strongest performances of the season Thursday at the Fairfield-Choteau Invitational, held at Freezout Lake.

The meet was originally scheduled for Harvest Hills Golf Course in Fairfield but was moved after more than a foot of snow left the course unsuitable for competition. Runners instead competed on a 5K out-and-back course along the gravel roads at Freezout Lake.

Senior Thomas Knickerbocker led the Coyotes with an eighth-place finish in 18:46.8, breaking the 19-minute barrier for the first time and setting a new personal best.

Junior Corin Scarborough also reached a major season goal, finishing 18th in 19:51.5. The performance marked Scarborough’s first official sub-20 5K after narrowly missing the mark earlier this season.

Sophomore Tel Gray continued his return to form with a season-best 20:14.8, good for 23rd overall.

Freshman Jaxon Hooker rounded out Shelby’s finishers with another breakthrough performance, placing 32nd in 22:56.2. The time was a personal best and marked his first race under 23 minutes.

The results continued a season of steady improvement for the Shelby boys, with three personal bests and one season best coming in the team’s final competition before the State Championships.

Shelby will now spend the final week preparing for the MHSA State Cross Country Championships on Saturday, October 24, at Amend Park in Billings. The Class B girls race is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., and the Class B boys race is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
