The Shelby Junior High Wrestlers started off their season this past Saturday at the annual Choteau Team Tournament.
Sixteen teams, both local and from far, graced the mats. The tournament was divided into four pools with four teams per pool. In a round-robin style match-up, each of the four teams would dual each other.
In Shelby’s pool there was Sidney’s Eagle Force, Townsend and Great Falls North #2. This year was the first time in many years where Shelby had a nearly full team with almost every weight class represented.
The first dual was against the perennial power of Sidney’s Eagle Force. The dual didn’t go in favor of the Coyotes but they were able to win five of the head to head matches. Harold Miller (115lbs) won by decision 7-0, Aidan Torgerson (130lbs) won by decision 3-1, Rowdy White (140lbs) won by fall, Sahkaia Wehr (165lbs) won by fall and Jacob Kingsolver (HWT) won by fall.
The second dual was against the Bulldogs of Townsend. The Coyotes handily defeated Townsend. Paolo Manda (65lbs) picked up his very first win in wrestling by way of forfeit. Nathan Benjamin (70lbs), Kyle McDermott (80lbs), and Caden Laine (85lbs) also won their first junior high matches by fall. “It was great to see our first year wrestlers get their first wins. They are picking up techniques very quickly and show lots of promise.”
The third dual was against Great Falls North #2. Again, the ‘Yotes were victorious. Will Caffrey joined the growing list of first wins winning by fall.
The Coyote team went 2-1 in the first round placing them against the “JV” team comprised of extra wrestlers from Sidney’s Eagle Force/Delta Force, Townsend, Cut Bank and East Middle School in the preliminary championship round.
Showing no mercy, the Coyotes went on to win the dual against the JV squad placing them in the consolation championship match against the Flathead. The final dual didn’t go quite as planned for the Coyotes but they were able to win a few decisive matches in the upper weights. Harold Miller (115lbs), Cameron Brusven (125lbs), Rowdy White (140lbs), Bryant Mertz (150lbs) and Sahkia Wehr (165lbs) all recorded wins in the final dual meet. The Coyote wrestlers finished in 4th place out of sixteen teams.
Notable performances for the day include: Rowdy White 5-0, Sahkaia Wehr 5-0, Harold Miller 4-1, Cameron Brusven 4-1, and Jacob Kingsolver 4-1.
The team will travel to Fort Benton on Friday for a mixer starting at 5:00pm and then to Havre on Saturday for a tournament.
