Junior High Wrestling Tournament in Conrad

The Shelby Junior High Wrestling Team is preparing for the final showdown at the Divisional Tournament being hosted by Fort Benton this Saturday.

But before the season finale, the young Coyotes tested their mettle at the annual Conrad Wrestling Tournament this past Saturday. With 15 teams in attendance, Shelby found themselves near the middle of the pack placing 9th as a team and placing seven wrestlers on the podium.

At 110lbs, Cameron Brusven placed 2nd. He started his march to the finals by defeating Hayden Rushford of Townsend by major decision 11-0. In the semi-finals, Brusven was paired with Cale Giles of Fairfield. With his eyes set on the finals, Cameron defeated Giles by decision 5-0. This placed Brusven in the championship match against familiar foe Jace Thompson of Fort Benton. Thompson won the contest by major decision 9-0 giving Cam 2nd place.

At 125lbs, Rowdy White was the bracket champion. White dominated the competition starting with a fall against Jake Justensen of Cut Bank in 1:25 and then yet another quick fall in the semis against Trenton Maloughney of Havre in :24. White would have to square off against another Havre grappler, Sosia Ross in the championship match. Rowdy would prove that he was all business winning by major decision 11-0 in the finals crowning him champion.

130lbs was a stacked weight class but this didn’t deter Sahkaia Wehr. Despite an early round setback against Bridger Gouchenour of Conrad losing by fall in 1:59, Wehr was determined to make his name known. Sahkaia would win the next two matches by fall to place him in the consolation finals. He would defeat James Jury of Choteau in 1:13, Miguel Perez of Fairfield in :58 and then avenge his loss by defeating Gouchenour by decision 9-2 giving him 3rd place for the weekend.

Wrestling at a heavier weight, Matthew Riehl showed that he was ready to enter battle for the day at 165lbs. Riehl started off by defeating Cody Boggs of Browning by decision in a close match 5-3. His next match he wrestled Hayden Axtman of Fort Benton only to lose by fall in :42. Axtman eventually went on to win the weight class. In the consolation bracket, Matthew first wrestled Kolby Daniels of Cut Bank and won by decision 8-4. In the consolation final, Riehl would square off against Waylon Bullcalf of Browning. Bullcalf would win the contest by fall in 2:33 giving Riehl 4th place for the day.

Other notable performances include: Jaden Oliver 6th place at 110lbs, Trenton Emerson 6th place at 115lbs, Tanner Tustian 5th place at 120lbs, and William Patterson 6th place at 185lbs.

The Coyote squad will travel to Fort Benton this Saturday for the Divisional Tournament. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 10:00am.
