Shelby Public Schools

High School Improvement Plan

From:  Shelby Public School District #14

To:  Parents of High School Students

Because Shelby High School Failed to Meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in Mathematics for 2 consecutive years, the High School is now under Title I School Improvement.  On the State Criterion Referenced Test the set target for Proficient in Math is 68% For the year 2007 – 2008 the class average was 44%.

The Shelby Public School District #14 improvement process include:  the aligning of the Math Curriculum (K – 12), providing local tutoring options, and implementing a new Math series (K- 9).

Because of the Title I School Improvement  Process that Shelby High School is currently under, there are options for those students who qualify.  (1)  In a district with more than one school per grade system, we would be required to offer parents the choice of sending their child to another public school in the district that in not in improvement.  Since there are no other public schools in our district at this grade level, we must consider and establish, if practicable, agreements with other districts to accept our students from this school, although we are not required to furnish or pay transportation.  We have determined that this option is not practicable due to distances involved and the high cost of fuel for parents or the other district to pay transportation.  However, if another district will accept your child, and you are willing to provide transportation, you are free to pursue this option.  (2) You can choose a free tutoring program that is best for your child.  (If your family meets the income limits under the law.)  A list of approved tutoring programs is available at the High School office.

Sincerely

Matt Genger
